Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care takes a holistic approach to caring for the entire body. Chiropractors use various diagnostic methods to assess your state of health then develop individualized programs to encourage healing and promote long-term wellness. Using a combination of chiropractic adjustment, ART®, physical modalities, K-Laser therapy, nutrition counselling, and/or rehabilitation programs, we create a path for each patient’s specific needs.

We are all born with the ability to heal and recover from illness

Our bruises heal, cuts mend and common colds are overcome. Your nervous system regulates this inborn healing ability.

The nervous system is a key part of your body. It is the communication system between your brain and all of your body’s muscles, organs and tissues. For your body to remain healthy, your nervous system must function well. For your nervous system to function well, it must be free of interference. The spine is the most common site of nervous system interference because nerves travel from the spinal cord through openings on either side of the spine to get to all of your cells and organs.

Chiropractic for Pregnancy

More and more mothers are discovering the many benefits associated with chiropractic care during pregnancy.  They appreciate a chiropractor’s respect for the body’s natural design and function.  The health benefits of chiropractic are being recognized as important ingredients to a healthier pregnancy and an overall easier birth.

How can chiropractic during pregnancy add greater comfort?

Chiropractic care in pregnancy is wonderful addition to prenatal care.  Preexisting or unnoticed imbalances in the spine become stressed during pregnancy and these pronounced discomforts make it difficult to perform routine, daily activities.

There are many benefits to receiving Chiropractic care during pregnancy, some of which include:

  • Reduction in back and pelvic pain
  • More ease with the natural changes related to pregnancy
  • Increased space in the pelvis facilitating the baby’s growth
  • Correct positioning of the pelvis, facilitating labor and delivery
  • Decreased labour time
  • Greater ease and comfort during labour and birth, thereby reducing the need for pain relief drugs during delivery

Is Chiropractic Care during pregnancy safe and will I be comfortable during the adjustments?

Definitely!  Chiropractic care is one of the safest forms of healthcare for pregnant women and their children.  Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, drug-free, natural approach to health and wellness which allows for the release of any tension or imbalances in the body.  Not only are the chiropractic techniques altered specifically for the ease of the pregnant woman, but we also have special pillows to create a comfortable and relaxing experience.  As your body changes and expands, you will eagerly anticipate your visits.

What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique, discovered by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), is a specific chiropractic adjustment for pregnant mothers. It is a chiropractic technique designed to relieve the causes of intrauterine constraint, allowing the baby to turn into a head down, vertex position.

Intrauterine constraint is defined as any force external to the developing fetus that obstructs the normal movement of the fetus. Intrauterine constraint can prevent the developing fetus from attaining the proper position (occiput anterior), and result in a breech, transverse or occiput posterior position.  Today, nearly 13% of all cesarean deliveries performed are due to a breech presentation.  The Webster Technique has been found to have an 82% success rate in clinical studies (JMPT July/August 2002) for posterior or breech babies.

The technique aligns the pelvis and releases any tension in the ligaments of the uterus, thus relaxing the uterus.  The relaxed uterus makes it easier for a breech baby to turn naturally.  The Chiropractor does not physically move the baby, but the gentle adjustments open up the space in the pelvis, allowing the baby enough room to move into the proper position.  If the baby is already in the correct head-down position, the technique helps maintain that ideal position. The Webster Technique is a very safe and gentle way to help promote a natural birth experience.

Dr. Rahim and Dr. Chamberlain are both certified with the Academy of Chiropractic Family Practice, having completed the 200 hour Certification Program (C.A.C.C.P) with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA).  Their training consists of hands-on and practical information on prenatal, postnatal and pediatric care.

Chiropractic for Infants, Children and Adolescents

As parents today, we take a very active role in making sure that our children are as healthy as possible.  We feed them nutritious foods, look for safe toys, encourage physical activity and maintain a wellness schedule for checkups at the dentist, eye doctor and hearing specialists.

Now more than ever, parents are also bringing their children to doctors of chiropractic for day-to-day health concerns we’re all familiar with: colds, sore throats, ear infections or fluid in the ear, fevers, colic, asthma, tonsillitis, allergies, bed-wetting, infections, growing pains, falls, stomach aches, and the hundred and one little and big things children go through as they grow up.

How does Chiropractic for Children work?

It’s most important to understand that chiropractic is not a treatment for disease. Its purpose is to reduce nerve system stress, a serious and often painless condition most children (and adults) experience in their bodies. System stress interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system, can weaken internal organs and organ systems, lower resistance, reduce healing potential and set the stage for sickness and disorders of all kinds.

When a chiropractor frees the nervous system from spinal stress, the healing power of the body is unleashed: the immune system works more effectively, resistance to disease increases, and your child’s body functions at full capacity. Your child can then respond more efficiently to internal and external environmental stresses such as germs, changes in temperature, humidity, toxins, pollen and other stresses that he or she comes in contact with.

So although children with diseases are often brought to the chiropractor, the chiropractor is not treating the disease but is instead reducing nerve system stress, thus permitting their body’s natural healing potential to function at its best.

Why do kids need Chiropractic care?

Nerve stress is caused by vertebral subluxations. Subluxations are misalignments or distortions of the spinal column, skull, hips, and related tissues (the structural system) that irritate, stretch, impinge or otherwise interfere with the proper function of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, spinal nerves and peripheral nerves). Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body, any interference to it can have wide-ranging effects.

How Is Nerve System Stress Caused?

Nerve system stress can be caused by physical, chemical and/or emotional stress. Physical stress may start in the womb, with the baby positioned in a distorted or twisted manner. Spinal nerve stress in newborns is common today. This may be caused by a traumatic or difficult birth which can introduce great stress to the infant’s skull, spinal column and pelvis. Throughout childhood, the normal childhood mishaps every child experiences can be a source of spinal and cranial trauma. Most of the time, the pain from the initial injury “goes away” however the damage incurred continues to affect the future function of the child’s nerve system.

How can I recognize if my child has spinal misalignments?

There a few easy to read signs that can let a parent know if their child has a misalignment. They include:

  • a head tilt to one side
  • difficulty breastfeeding, whether it’s due to a poor latch or constrained neck movement
  • restricted motion of the head to one side
  • changes to appetite
  • altered sleeping patterns as an infant or child
  • change in behaviour, whether more withdrawn or more aggressive
  • tugging on one or both ears
  • colic or longs periods of constant, inconsolable crying
  • changes to digestion
  • changes to concentration and/or focus

Kids Make Great Patients!

Adjusting a child is not a difficult procedure.  In fact, in most cases, a child’s spine is much easier to adjust than an adult’s.  They have not had the long-standing subluxations, their muscles are usually not as tense and they are generally more relaxed than adults.

Not only are kids more straight-forward to adjust, but also in most cases, they hold their adjustments for longer periods of time and their corrective plans are almost always significantly shorter than the average adult. However, with the falls, accidents and the generally active lives most kids experience, regular check-ups are vital.

One of our favorite parts of chiropractic care is adjusting kids!  The energy they bring into the office is endless and they can’t wait to get on the table.

Today’s parents desire to achieve a state of true health—this is leading them to seek health care options which support their children’s own natural ability to be healthy and well.

Chiropractic care is a safe, gentle and effective option. All children deserve the right to express their fullest potential and your family chiropractor can help them achieve it.

Questions and Answers about Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic helps to remove postural imbalances and structural misalignments that can accumulate in our bodies over time. Our spines change and develop problems just like our teeth, eyes and heart. Left unchecked for a long time, these changes may lead to pain, stiffness or other more serious problems.

The nervous system is a key part of your body. It is the communication system between your brain and all of your body’s muscles, organs and tissues. For your body to remain healthy, your nervous system must function well. For your nervous system to function well, it must be free of interference. The spine is the most common site of nervous interference because nerves travel from the spinal cord through openings on either side of the spine to get to all of your cells and organs.

Each of us is born with the ability to heal and recover from illness. Our bruises heal, cuts mend and common colds are overcome. Your nervous system regulates this inborn healing ability.

Think of your brain as a central command post sending and receiving information through telephone wires (your nerves) which branch out to connect all areas of a city (your body). A short circuit in a wire cuts off communication just like misalignments in your spine can put pressure on the nerves. This pressure interferes with your nervous system, affects your ability to self-heal and may prolong injury or illness.

The customized care you receive from your chiropractor may help to improve your posture, muscle balance and mobility. It can also restore the integrity of your nervous system and get rid of pain quickly, so you can get back to feeling good!

From professional athletes to homemakers, engineers to electricians, infants to seniors, chiropractic care has been the answer to optimum health. Many people, of all ages – including children and seniors – see a chiropractor for back, neck or joint problems, while others may seek relief from the discomfort caused by headaches, high blood pressure, pregnancy, asthma or other conditions. Still others find that regular visits to their chiropractor keep them in peak condition.

We regularly have a dentist check our teeth, an optometrist check our eyes and a doctor check our blood pressure and heart, yet we take the spine – a crucial component of our body – for granted. Regular checkups of your spine can help you maintain better health.

Chiropractors treat people for many conditions, including low back pain, headache, shoulder pain, sciatica, arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Sports injuries (strains, sprains, bursitis, tendonitis, etc.), and repetitive stress damage (carpal tunnel syndrome), are also commonly treated conditions. Chiropractors also advise on corrective exercises and sporting performance enhancement tactics, as well as lifestyle balance and nutrition.

An adjustment is the main method of treatment used by your chiropractor. It is a specialized gentle, controlled and safe pressure applied to your spine to restore the proper motion and position of your vertebrae. It is a precise procedure that your highly skilled chiropractor has learned and perfected over years of study and clinical practice.

During your first visit, the chiropractor will want to know about your health history as well as your current complaint. Your home and work life as well as your level of physical activity may also affect your health, so don’t be surprised to be asked questions about these.

Although chiropractors use their hands for most treatments, they also use other methods such as heat, light, specialized adjusting instruments, ultrasound, electrotherapy, personalized exercise programs, muscle-testing and balancing. Your chiropractor can also give you information and guidance on how you can stay healthy through proper nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes.

Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during four intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractor typically uses her hands to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to reduce pain, and restore or enhance joint functioning.

Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

That depends on your condition. The length of time you have had the problem, your age and the degree of your disability all affect the length of your treatment.

For some patients, progress comes quickly. Others discover it can take weeks or months. Many factors affect the healing process. Within a week or so, most patients see enough progress to encourage them to complete our recommendations. Some patients rely on chiropractic to help manage episodes of spinal problems. Others include chiropractic as part of a plan of ongoing wellness care. How long you benefit from care is up to you.

Before your first visit, check into private health insurance coverage through your employer. You may have coverage of chiropractic treatments up to a certain limit for every calendar year. If you’ve suffered an injury at work, the cost of any necessary chiropractic treatments may be covered by Workers’ Compensation.

MSP Coverage Information

MSP provides partial coverage for persons earning less than $24 thousand dollars per year. Call us to find out more about your coverage. Fees related to X-ray examinations, insurance reports and requested letters are the patient’s responsibility.

Extended Health Plan Benefits

Patients may receive reimbursement of the government user fee and for fees not covered by the B.C. Medical Services Plan. This information is available from your employer. Receipts are available from your chiropractic office and should be sent to your extended health benefits carrier. Consult your employer for required reimbursement forms.

Workers’ Compensation Board Coverage for office visits and X-rays are provided for work-related injuries. Workers are covered for wage loss benefits. No referral is required for a chiropractic visit. Injured persons should consult their doctor of chiropractic immediately upon injury.

ICBC coverage is provided for office visits and X-rays for injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents. No referral is required. ICBC may pay only part of the usual office fees. Any remaining balance is the responsibility of the patient. This portion may be recoverable upon settlement of your claim. Your chiropractor will provide, upon request, a medical legal report and attend court when requested by your lawyer or ICBC’s lawyer.

Yes! Chiropractic treatment is as beneficial to children as it is to adults, since it is based on the basic biological and physiological sciences that apply equally to both.

Even today’s “natural” childbirth methods can affect an infant’s spine. Preliminary studies suggest that colic, unusual crying, poor appetite, ear infections or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress.

The scientific literature is now showing that low back pain is a very prevalent condition amongst school children. Regardless, children can benefit by periodic spinal examinations where the chiropractor will look for clues to possible postural weaknesses that may predispose children to later problems related to their spine and skeleton.

Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

The birth process may be the first time our spines lose their normal position and/or motion. After that, learning to walk, riding a bike or playing sports can produce so-called growing pains that can worsen if ignored, until they become more difficult to correct as an adult.

Every health procedure, from taking aspirin to giving blood, involves a level of risk.

Chiropractic adjustments are among the safest of all health care interventions because they are non-surgical, drug-free and present an extremely low risk. An adjustment is the main method of treatment used by your chiropractor. It is a specialized gentle, controlled and safe pressure applied to your spine to restore the proper motion and position of your vertebrae. This precise procedure has been perfected by your highly skilled chiropractor over years of Chiropractic College and clinical practice. Complications arising from adjustment are rare.

That depends on your condition. The length of time you have had the problem, your age and the degree of your disability all affect the length of your treatment. Your chiropractor should tell you the extent of recommended treatment and how long you can expect it to last.

One of the main reasons people choose chiropractic is that they often get quick results. Individual cases vary and chronic conditions obviously need more treatment. However, Workers’ Compensation Board studies show that people with low back pain return to work much faster with chiropractic care.

You might also consider the benefits of regular chiropractic adjustments even when you feel healthy. Sometimes you won’t know you have a disorder of the neuromusculoskeletal system until it becomes acute and painful. So, just as you see your dentist to have your teeth checked and your optometrist for eye exams, regular visits to your chiropractor can catch related health conditions early, often preventing them from developing into major problems. Remember, your spine is every bit as susceptible to wear and tear as your teeth and your eyes, so you should look after it.

Clinical experience suggests that individuals with chronic conditions such as degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) or recurrent neck pain, back pain or headaches may experience less frequent and less severe symptoms when under regular chiropractic care. This also applies to individuals in highly stressful situations and those who experience repetitive physical and postural strain from their daily activities. Whether ongoing chiropractic treatment can prevent back pain from occurring in the first place, or prevent a previous condition from re-occurring, requires further study.

No, a patient does not have to be referred. Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health care professionals in every province in Canada, which means that patients can consult them directly. However, chiropractors often work closely with MDs, 44 per cent of whom refer their patients to chiropractors when they believe chiropractic treatment will help alleviate a patient’s condition. Similarly, chiropractors frequently refer to medical doctors when necessary.

Pain or discomfort in one area of the body may be linked functionally to discomfort arising from another area. As such, addressing dysfunction in one part of the body may relieve symptoms in another part.

If you look at a model of the spine, you can see that the spine is one continuous structure. Adjustment at various points along the structure may be needed to help reduce biomechanical stresses on other parts of the spine and to relieve discomfort when it is clinically necessary.

The spine is also the protective channel that surrounds the spinal cord. Apart from special nerves originating from the brain and brain stem, all nerves in the body involved with bodily functions such as sensation and motor control emanate from the spinal cord and travel through openings in the spine between the vertebrae. Spinal nerves carry highly complex information that is important for the proper functioning of the human body.

Spinal dysfunction can have an effect on proper functioning of the nervous system causing symptoms in other parts of the body. Adjustment, often in combination with other therapies, may help alleviate symptoms and even address the causative factors.

Adjustment of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, and it can make a popping sound. It is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, and is not painful.
